One-room Schoolhouses

The Green Historical Society presented "One-room Schoolhouses" on November 21, 2011 at the City of Green Central Administration Building at 7 p.m.  Featured speakers were Patty Stiles and Carol Baltrinic.  Over 70 people came out and learned about school in the 1880's in Green Township.

In Memoriam—Ferne Boettler, 1903-1990

This program was graciously sponsored by Bob Hutchison in remembrance of Ferne Boettler.  Mrs. Boettler was a beloved teacher in Greensburg for many years.

Ferne Boettler was born Ferne I. Kepler on January 3, 1903 in East Liberty.  Her parents were Ernest H. Kepler and Lillian J. (Foust) Kepler.  Her father Ernest was a farmer.

Ferne Boettler was a 1921 graduate of Green High School graduate.  After high school, Ferne attended Kent State.  After
graduation, she returned to Green and taught for a few years prior to marriage.

Ferne married Raymond Boettler on May 28, 1924.  Raymond was born October 1, 1900 and was the son of Louis A. Boettler, a farmer in Green Township, and Sarah (Cramer) Boettler.

During war time, the Superintendent asked her to return to teaching while the men were otherwise occupied.  Ferne taught primarily 3rd grade at Greensburg Elementary.

Ferne Boettler was one of two teachers credited with calming ushering students from the old portion of Greensburg Elementary when fire broke out in 1945.  Ferne loved teaching and stayed long after the war was over, eventually retiring in 1968.

Ferne passed away on November 2, 1990, but her influence continues through the positive impact she made on so many Greensburg alumni.
