Green Township was long known for its quality orchards. These orchards sustained Green’s farm families since the early 1820s. Many families in the surrounding communities have fond memories of apple picking each Fall in Green.
During the Prohibition, Green’s fruit crops found a new, very profitable market. Many apples were sold to large scale illegal alcohol producers. Many Green residents took matters into their own hands and stills appeared in backyards, basements and barns all over the township. Our orchard crops kept Green afloat during the early years of the great Depression.
