Klinefelter Cemetery Mapping

In April of 2017, 40 Green High School students, members of the Green Historical Society and City of Green staff surveyed the Klinefelter Cemetery under the direction of Dr. Timothy Matney, University of Akron archaeology professor and Jerrad Lancaster (2003 Green grad), a Senior Lecturer from the archeology department of UA.  The students were introduced to several techniques that included using an electrical resistivity meter as well as using a surveying total station theodolite to measure and document the exact position of gravestones.  Mr. Lancaster demonstrated the use of a drone equipped with GIS mapping equipment for the students and intends to create a 3D modeling of the cemetery with the data that was collected.  The purpose of the project is to identify the boundaries of the cemetery so that the city can move forward with its plan to honor this space with appropriate fencing and signage.
More than 4000 data points were captured during the two day event and Dr. Matney and Jerrad Lancaster are planning to return to finish the outer perimeter of the site with additional equipment sometime in the near future eventually producing a survey that will reveal what lies beneath.
City administration, the Green Historical Society and Dr. Matney are planning a public presentation of the Klinefelter project and findings to be held at the annual "State of Historic Preservation" in October.
City administration, the Green Historical Society and Dr. Matney held a public presentation of the Klinefelter project and findings at the annual "State of Historic Preservation" October 26, 2017.  Dr. Matney's presentation from this event is available below.

The project resumed again in May 2018 when Green High School students and members of the Green Historical Society gathered to assist Dr. Timothy Matney and Dr. Jerrad Lancaster once again.  Drs. Matney and Lancaster presented their findings to the City of Green later in 2018 and their final report is available below.
