Green Township: Range 9, Township 12
Green Township is Range 9N, Township 12W of the Congress Lands North of the Seven Ranges. When the Land Ordinance of 1796 passed, it defined the surveying system to be used by all public land surveys. The townships are 6 miles square and include 36 one mile square sections. Each section may be divided into quarter sections of 160 acres each. The numbering of the sections is serpentine, starting in the northeast corner of the township. Townships are identified as being north or south of a baseline and in a range east or west of a longitudinal meridian line.
Land west of the Cuyahoga-Tuscarawas line and north of the U.S. military District remained Indian territory until that land was ceded in the Treaty of Ft. Industry (1805). The ceded lands lying within the Western Reserve were surveyed as an extension of the original Western Reserve survey of 1796-97. Congress Lands North of the Seven Ranges (south of the Reserve) were surveyed in 1806-07.
