The Henry Heiss Family
The Henry Heiss family relocated to Ohio from Erie County, Pennsylvania. Henry Heiss was a circuit rider and later Deacon of the Evangelical Association for the Western Conference (Ohio). Reference to Mr. Heiss’ work in the Evangelical Association is documented in ‘The Evangelical Church in Ohio, Memorial Edition 1816-1951’, by Roy B. Leedy, The Ohio Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church 1959. A list of the references to Henry Heiss' service in the Evangelical Association is documented below:
· Western Conference Attendance – Carmel District (Pa.) 1838. See Leedy pg. 835.
· Western Conference Attendance – Franklin Circuit – 1839. See Leedy pg. 835.
· March 4, 1839 13th Session of Western Conference at Greensburg – Deacon Henry Heiss. See Leedy pg. 69.
· May 20, 1840 1st Session of Ohio Conference – Deacon Henry Heiss. See Leedy pg. 83.
Additionally, Henry Heiss’ involvement with the Evangelical Association is also documented in ‘The History of the Evangelical Association’, by R. Yeakel, Cleveland 1894.
· Canton Circuit – 1835 (reference to colleague of Samuel Van Gunten). See Yeakel pg. 306.
· Pastor Cleveland – Salem 1842-44. See Leedy pg. 688. See also Yeakel pg. 320.
Henry Heiss was married to Eliza Heiss and the 1860 Census lists Henry 55, Eliza 54, Sarah 18, Mary 15, and Henry 5 as residents of the large farm in Green Township. It is believed that Henry and Eliza Heiss also had a son Roland Heiss who later owned land in Section 16 of Green Township. Additionally, Henry and Eliza Heiss had a daughter, Sophia Heiss (according to Evangelical Messenger Obituary Records).

Henry Heiss owned a large farm in Sections 16 and 21 that covered about 400 acres. He also owned several hundred acres in Springfield Township. The farm in Green extended along Greensburg and Arlington Roads from Steese Road to Boettler Road. The farm house faces Steese Road near the intersection with Greensburg Road and is still standing today. To learn more about the Henry Heiss home, click here. |
The large farm in Green was part of an original land grant of Green Township, Stark County, Range 9, Township 12, Section 21 NW 317.76 acres, to Conrad Delenan (Dillman) on May 24, 1814. This data is from a transcription of the Steubenville Entry Book. This land apparently transferred from Conrad Dillman to Michael Dillman after Conrad Dillman’s death. Michael Dillman then sold 160 acres including the property of the subject designation to Henry Heiss in 1849.

The Heiss family starts with a Evangelical-Methodist minister, Rev. Peter Heiss, born in Pa. and in 1850 was in Mifflin Township, Columbia County, age 33. His wife was Catherine Williams, age 26. They were married in Sept. 1848 in Cumberland. Peter moved his family to Dauphin Co. and then to Luzerne Co. (probably means Columbia Co.) and then to West Buffalo Township, Union County where in the 1860 Census, Peter Heiss is 42 (born 1818) a preacher; and his wife Catherine is 36. Children: Susannah, 9 and George is 2. In 1870 they are in West Buffalo Township, he is 52, she is 46, Elizabeth is 19 and William is 9.
